On 26 January 1950, the Douglas C-54 Skymaster serial number 42-72469 disappeared en route from Anchorage, Alaska to Great Falls, Montana, with 8 crew and 36 passengers, including a young mother and her infant aboard. No trace of the aircraft has ever been found, despite past and present efforts to bring closure for all relations to those lost or invested in solving this mystery.
On the day of disappearance, an earlier attempt to depart had been made, but due to trouble with one of its four engines, it was delayed several hours. Two hours after its eventual departure, the flight marked its third scheduled check-in point near Snag, Yukon, where the pilot reported that the plane was on schedule but experiencing turbulence and heavy icing. The flight never checked in at its' second point, Aishihik, Yukon, and was never heard from again.
The flight route loosely followed the Alaska Highway south and it's possible that the pilot had been following the highway visually, although this is unknown for sure. Other pilots of the time had been known to take short-cuts from the flight path to save time and this would be plausible due to their late start.
